- Willard Gene "Willy" Haverhals, 50, of Sioux Center, died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon, May 12, at his home. Funeral services were Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with the Rev. Arnold Punt officiating. Interment was in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.
Haverhals was born February 25, 1954, to Peter and Josephine Haverhals, Jr. He grew up on the family farm west of Sioux Center and attended Lebanon Christian School. He went on to graduate from Western Christian High School. On August 12, ,1975, he married the love of his life, Nora Sandbulte, at Carmel Reformed Church. The couple were blessed with three children and made their home on the farm where Willy was raised. He was proud of his family's farming heritage and embraced farm life during good times and bad. He would become especially enthusiastic during spring and fall field work.
He fed cattle for many years and enjoyed going to the sale barn and visiting with others in the industry. He was an active member of the Sioux County Cattle feeders. He loved the Lord. He was a devoted member of Lebanon Christian Reformed Church where he served as a deacon, on the Christian Education Committee and participated in Men's Society. He had a meaningful experience while attending a Promise Keepers conference and had served on the Sioux Center Christian School Board.
He alvays cherished-his family, But especially loved spending time with them after being diagnosed with ALSA. During the last few years he loved all the activity in the house when his children and grandchildren visited and was extremely thankful for the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 28 years, Nora of Sioux Center; son and daughters-in-law, Peter and Jody Haverhals of Sioux Center; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Mike Rens of Ireton; daughter, Sheri Haverhals of Sioux Center; two grandchildren; his mother, Josephine Haverhals of Sioux Center; brother and sister-in-law, Peter John III and Anne Haverhals of Lynwood, Washington; sister and brother—in-law, Gertrude and Gord Blom of Sioux Center; sister, JoAnne Dekkenga of Le Mars; father-in-law and mother- in-law, Delmar and Betty, Sandbulte of Sioux Center; several Sandbulte in-laws; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Peter J. Haverhals, Jr.; and brother, David Haverhals. In lieu of flowers, the Haverhals family requests memorials be directed to ALS Association, 4120 S. Elmwood Place, Sioux Falls, SD 57105
