- Effie Vos Brands, age 87, of Rock Valley, died Thurs., Nov. 27, 1997, at the Hegg Memorial Hospital at Rock Valley.
Funeral service was at 1:30 p.m., Mon., Dec. 1, at the Christian Reformed Church at Hawarden. Rev. Dave Heilman officiated. Visitation was Sun., Nov. 30, with the family present from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley. Burial was at the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden.
Effie was born August 9, 1910 in the Netherlands, the daughter of Frank and Johanna (Uit De Bulten) Van Dieren.
She came to the U.S.A. to the Hawarden area with her family when she was three years old.
Effie married Arie Johannes Vos on February 15, 1933 near Hawarden. Together they farmed near Hawarden for thirty-five years when Arie died on Dec. 8, 1968.
Effie moved to Rock Valley until she married Henry Brands on Dec. 5, 1975 at Inwood where they lived. Henry died on Feb. 1, 1995, Effie moved back to Rock Valley in May of 1996 where she became a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, Effie enjoyed crochet work, which she did for many people.
Surviving relatives include one son and his wife, Frank and Darlene Vos of Dakota City, NE; three daughters and their husbands, Jo and Willard Keunen of Alton, Alida and Gary Madtson of Luverne, MN, Evelyn and Mel Bajema of Grand Rapids, MI; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fannie Kruid of Rock Valley, Hattie Williams of Huron, SD; two sister-in-laws, Fannie Van Dieren of Ireton, Christina Kersbergen of Rock Valley; one step-son and his wife, Gerald and Lavina Brands of Inwood; eight step-daughters and their husbands, Rena and Arie Int Veld of Rock Valley, Jennie and Joe Dragstra of Edgerton, MN, Nelma Byker of Hawarden, Dorothy Voortman of Sioux Center, Gertrude Kruid of Hawarden, Marian Mae and Gerald Wallenburg of Inwood, Arlene and Comic Bakker of Valley Springs, SD, Carol and Bill Bouwman of Rock Valley; forty-six step-grandchildren; seventy-six step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-greatgrandchild.
Effie was preceded in death by her two husbands, Arie and Henry; son, Leonard Vos; two brothers, Gerrit and Fred Van Dieren.
Memorials may be given to the Sioux County Hospice.
